About Nancy

Washington sculptor Nancy Mintz is former resident of Nevada County, with roots in California going back to the 1860s. She considers herself a “materials artist,” taking her inspiration from the innate potential of the diverse media that she has mastered through her career— ceramics, metals, wood, textiles, and paper. Each material is employed for its unique ability to signify meaning and convey emotion.

Mintz is currently exploring the diversity of natural biological communities in her work, focusing on the changes that affect them over time. She is especially interested in the forms of memory: the husks, pods, and shells left behind by the relentless fecundity of life. The medium she uses in this work is fine brass wire, which she employs gesturally, like pencil lines. The resulting structures are usually covered with a soft Japanese paper, creating translucent forms with a uniquely ethereal presence.

Nancy Mintz received her BFA from California College of Art, Oakland and her MFA from Mills College. Her work has been exhibited at the Kala Art Institute, California Craft Museum, Bolinas Museum, Riverside Museum of Art, Southern Exposure, and the Nevada County Center for the Arts, among others. She is currently represented by Traywick Contemporary, in Berkeley, CA.
